Week 3: Grammar and Quote

Reader's Workshop

HW: Finish books this week!

I walked into class and took my seat at my desk. I wrote down my agenda in my binder reminder as the Take a Minute video played. Then, Olivia walked up to Ms. Nakada's desk and read her blog from Friday. When she finished reading from the laptop, she looked up with a sly grin and said with an extremely sarcastic voice, "I choose Norah!" which she probably thought was ridiculous. I dragged my feet to the desk at the front of the room with my stuff and began typing.

Ms. Nakada told us to get out our English notebooks, and we wrote down "Week 3" in the table of contents. We started with our Grammar for the week, which was learning about adjectives and adverbs. An adjective describes a noun, and an adverb describes a verb action. Our quote for the week was, "It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love and protect one another. We have nothing to lose but our chains." By Assata Shakur. We learned that this person sadly passed last year, and she was a member of the Black Panther Party, a group that stood up for equal rights in a more violent way. Ms. Nakada led an important discussion about Assata Shakur's life, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the upsetting time that our world is currently experiencing.

After our discussion about the quote, Ms. Nakada had us take out our choice of book that we are supposed to be reading and we had silent reading time. At around 3:10, the class started packing up their stuff and getting ready to leave. Noise filled the classroom as people got ready to leave. The bell rang, and Ms. Nakada dismissed each side.
