Week 6: Song

School Trip

Reader's/Writer's workshop

HW: Read another 100 pages of a book by Monday 9/22

First thing of the day, we got out our binder reminders, wrote down the agenda, Norah read her blog, and Ms. Nakada said "I think that was point worthy." Then, we got out our English notebooks, wrote down the song, "Soy Yo" by Bomba Estereo. We watched the music video version of a young Latina girl dancing everywhere while the class was chatting and cracking up at the video. She then displayed the lyrics in English, and the class asked if we could replay the video, and Ms. Nakada said we could if we have time at the end of class. We wrote down the tones which some people said: upbeat, inspiring, funky, sassy, and others that I forgot. After that, she wrote down that the song was about trying and being yourself - confident. Then, after, Ameliana asked for Ms. Nakada to put the lyrics back up, and she did. Some favorite lyrics I heard were "I do what I want and die trying," "It's me," and what I put, "Nobody cares about what I'm doing." After, Ms. Nakada gave us a mini lecture about us talking, and told us to turn to our page for School Trip notes.

When we got out our notes, we were told to turn to page 76 in the book, which I noticed was the beginning of chapter 4. Ms. Nakada then asked us for an example of airplane etiquette, and the class gave some responses, which were mostly in the book. We were then told to turn to page 79, and she asked "What is going on with Maury?" and we wrote down "Maury uses his class privilege to fly first class." After, we read about the meaning of words, and the tone. Then, came a lot of talking for a few seconds. We were then given a lesson about honesty and we got some dumb questions. We then wrote down long flight - arrive in Paris. After that, we read about a concern with room assignments, and that Jordan gets stuck with Andy. Then, we were told to turn to page 88, and talked about how Andy is taunting Ramon about his money, but Maury saves Ramon from further humiliation by showing that he has more money than Andy, and that he shouldn't be treating Ramon like that. Then, on page 94, we read about how Ashley tried to give Alexandra a compliment, but Alex said that "This sounded a lot nicer when Drew said it." After that, we go to when Ramon and Maury get room service.

By this time, the literal time was 3:03 when we got a phone call. Ms. Nakada gave us one word: "Attendance." The class groaned, and we kept moving forward. We went to page 98 where the Americans were still fast in going about their day. We went to the next chapter about variety, chapter 5 where we talked about variety when it comes to different topics. After that, we were told to pack up if you are finished, and the time was 3:07, and I am rushing to write this now, and I packed up, finished the blog, and turned off the computer.
